Graphene, a form of a carbon where a single layer of carbon atoms creates a hexagonal (honeycomb) lattice, demonstrates a number of notable properties: it is said to be the strongest, the electrically most conductive whilst also being the thinnest material in the world. Other characteristics include its high thermal conductivity, very large surface area, stretchability, transparency and impermeability. It is a relatively new material that was produced for the first time in 2004 and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010.

First industrial applications of graphene in FRP make use of it as a mechanical reinforcement in sports equipment such as tennis rackets or bicycles. This, however, only makes little use of graphene’s potential in FRP.  


This project will include an initial literature review of graphene, its properties as well as current and potential applications. An emphasis shall be placed on FRP. Using these findings, an experimental plan shall be developed that explores the changes in the laminate’s mechanical and thermal properties due to the addition of graphene. This may also include its behaviour during damage. The experimental plan will then be carried out and evaluated. The samples used during the experiments will be manufactured using graphene samples from an industrial partner.


  • Literature review of graphene and its applications in composite materials
  • Manufacture of test specimens (GFRP with and without addition of graphene)
  • Development of an experimental plan that explores the changes due to the addition of graphene in a GFRP with respect to mechanical and thermal properties
  • Preparation and evaluation of experimental data
  • Written documentation


  • Basic knowledge of composite materials is recommended
  • Interest in practical work
  • Responsible and reliable work attitude
  • Communication during the project in German or English. Since this project is conducted in cooperation with English-speaking industrial partners, the report needs to be written in English.
