Braiding at the IFB
The Institute of Aircraft Design has three braiding machines for the robot-assisted, automated production of braided preforms. Two of these braiding machines feature a radial design that minimizes fiber damage and are equipped with special shuttles for processing high-performance fibers (e.g., carbon fibers).
Robot-assisted guidance of the cores during the braiding process enables high repeat accuracy and reproducibility of the braiding result.
The machinery can be used to process a wide range of fibers and produce a variety of component sizes.
Years of experience in the field of braiding, coupled with the possibility of using numerous other technologies and systems, enable the Institute of Aircraft Design to conduct scientific research into fundamental issues and to develop application-oriented and practical processes and products.
Braiding machines:
Herzog RF 1-176-100:
Radial braiding machine with 176 braiding clappers and 88 standing thread positions, braiding ring diameter up to 600 mm.
Herzog RF 1-64-100:
Radial braiding machine with 64 braiding clappers and 32 standing thread positions. The machine body can be divided, allowing closed rings to be braided.
Herzog NG 1/48-120:
Braiding machine in axial design.
Robots:
Kuka KR125/3 (125 kg payload)
Kuka KR210L180 (180 kg payload)
Rewinding machine:
Rewinding system from Herzog (SP280 + GRP08) with controlled thread tension for unwinding bobbins, as well as inner and outer take-up bobbins.
