How a pioneering vision is shaping the aviation of tomorrow

When sustainable mobility, zero-emission aviation and electric propulsion systems are being discussed around the world today, it is worth looking to Stuttgart. More than three decades ago, a research journey began at the University of Stuttgart that was far ahead of its time: the development of electrically powered aircraft for a new era of aviation.

At the heart of this remarkable story is a name closely associated with the development of electric flight in Germany: Professor Rudolf Voit-Nitschmann. Under his scientific leadership, a series of visionary aircraft projects emerged that played a decisive role in shaping international progress in the field of electric aviation.

The beginnings of this development date back to the early 1990s. At that time, work began at the Institute of Aircraft Design at the University of Stuttgart on an ambitious project called Icaré 2. The aircraft was conceived as a solar-electric motor glider and was intended to prove that crewed flight was possible without fossil energy sources. On 1 July 1996, the aircraft successfully completed its maiden flight, sending a strong signal worldwide for zero-emission aviation.

With Icaré 2, the Stuttgart engineers demonstrated for the first time that electric energy could be used in aviation not only in theory, but also in practice as a serious alternative. What at the time seemed like a futuristic experiment is now regarded as a foundation stone of modern sustainable aircraft development.

But the research did not stop there. In the years that followed, the team led by Professor Voit-Nitschmann worked on new concepts for energy storage and alternative propulsion systems. This led, in the mid-2000s, to the Hydrogenius project – an aircraft concept based on hydrogen fuel-cell technology. In 2006, this innovative project won the prestigious Berblinger Award of the City of Ulm and demonstrated the potential of alternative energy sources for aviation.

The University of Stuttgart ultimately achieved its international breakthrough with a project that is still regarded today as a milestone in electric aviation: e-Genius.

The two-seat electric aircraft was developed entirely from scratch around its electric propulsion system – not as a conversion of an existing aircraft, but as a new design made of composite material consistently optimised for efficiency. On 25 May 2011, e-Genius successfully took off for the first time.

Only a few weeks later, the e-Genius impressively demonstrated its performance: during a test flight, it covered 341 kilometres in two hours, using an amount of energy equivalent to just four litres of petrol. In doing so, e-Genius showed for the first time that electric aircraft do not have to remain experimental demonstrators, but can deliver real flight performance.

International successes followed. At the NASA-supported Green Flight Challenge in California, e-Genius won several awards in 2011, including a prize for particularly low-noise and energy-efficient flight. This firmly established the University of Stuttgart among the leading research locations worldwide for electric aviation.

Yet even after these successes, development did not come to an end. e-Genius was continuously advanced, and from 2016 onward the research activities were successfully continued by Professor Andreas Strohmayer, Professor Voit-Nitschmann’s successor. In the following years, record flights across the Alps were carried out, and hybrid versions were developed – both with a small external range extender and as a full hybrid with a generator unit. The aircraft was also converted into a research platform for automated electric flight control.

In 2022, a hybrid version of e-Genius completed a nonstop flight of more than 2,000 kilometres – another world record! In 2024, the aircraft was successfully used for electrically powered aerotowing of gliders and continues to serve today as a flying research laboratory for future electric propulsion concepts.

Three decades of electric flight research at the University of Stuttgart impressively show how visionary research can turn into technological reality over the long term. Long before sustainability became a global guiding principle, researchers in Stuttgart were already working on solutions for climate-friendly aviation.

Professor Rudolf Voit-Nitschmann and his team created far more than individual aircraft. They proved that innovation in aviation does not necessarily have to originate from large industrial corporations, but can also emerge from university research – driven by scientific curiosity, technical courage and a clear vision for the future.

Today, after around thirty years of development, the University of Stuttgart is regarded as one of Europe’s most important focal points for electric flight. And there is much to suggest that the technologies developed here will secure a lasting place in 21st-century aviation.

What once began as a visionary idea has long since become part of a global movement.

The future of sustainable flight has been profoundly shaped in Stuttgart – and it flies electrically!
