Hintergrund

NLR and CASA have developed a prototype composite forward pressure bulkhead as a part of the Clean Sky Green Regional Aircraft ITD. This design has managed to achieve a 10% weight reduction compared to the original aluminium bulkhead. The final design uses a sandwich concept that can easily meet stiffness and strength requirements. However, preliminary bird strike impact simulations have shown that the design does not meet impact requirements. Therefore a Dyneema plate was added on top of the sandwich to protect the bulkhead from bird impact damage.

Problemstellung

The project will perform material calibrations and modification of the structure to include the Dyneema plies. Also, the opportunity will be used to check calibration of the existing bird strike models against available published data. Simulations will then be performed to evaluate the new design and, if necessary, make further improvements. The numerical work will use the explicit FE code (PAM-CRASH).
