Der Forschungsbereich Flugzeugentwurf am Institut für Flugzeugbau widmet sich außer dem klassischen Flugzeugvorentwurf dem Entwurf und Bau bemannter und unbemannter Fluggeräte.

Dieser Bereich beschäftigt sich mit der Weiterentwicklung und Verbesserung der statistischen Vorentwurfswerkzeuge und der Durchführung von Konzeptstudien.

Bemannte Flugzeugprojekte

Dieser Bereich beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung, dem Bau und der Erprobung von zukunftsweisenden Leichtflugzeugprojekten. Dabei stehen ökoeffiziente Konzepte in Verbindung mit alternativen Antriebstechnologien, deren Ziel die Senkung des Energiebedarfs und der Lärmemissionen ist, besonders im Fokus. Das Solarflugzeug icaré und das Batterieflugzeug e-Genius werden vom IFB für die Praxiserprobung alternativer Antriebs- und Speichertechnologien betrieben.

Unbemannte Fluggeräte (UAS)

Dieser Bereich beschäftigt sich mit dem Themenfeld UAS (Unmanned Aerial System). Die Forschungsgruppe UAS arbeitet an Entwurf und Bau von Freiflugmodellen (Flächen-UAVs bzw. Helikoptern), in der Avionikentwicklung, in den Bereichen der Systemintegration und der professionellen Flugtestplanung und –durchführung. Größte realisierte UAVs waren bisher VELA2, NACRE und AMPAIR.
